Fund overlap, explained

What is mutual fund overlap?

Overlap is the percentage of two funds' portfolios invested in the same stocks. We compute it as the sum of the minimum weight each common stock has in the two funds — the standard method. 100% would mean identical portfolios; 0% means no common holdings.

Why does overlap matter?

If two funds hold largely the same stocks, you're paying two expense ratios for one portfolio — diversification you think you have but don't. Overlap above ~60% usually means the funds are near-substitutes.

Where does the data come from?

From each fund's latest monthly portfolio disclosure, which AMCs publish by regulation. We show the disclosure date on every comparison.
